“Promoting empowerment of people”: 52nd Session of the Commission for Social Development

25/02/2014

From 11th to 21st February, the 52nd Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York to discuss on the theme “promoting empowerment of people in achieving poverty eradiction, social integration and full employment and decent work for all”.

At the opening session, Sewa Lamsal Adhikari, chairing the session, stated that their work in these areas falls short and that a determined and proactive approach from all stakeholders to tackle widening inequality, poverty and high unemployment, especially among youth and women would be required.

Daniela Bas, Director of the Division for Social Policy and Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, introduced for the consideration of the Commission the Secretary-General’s report on “Policies and programs involving youth”. This progress report focuses on national programs and policies related to young people, in accordance with the Five-Year Action Agenda of the Secretary-General.

Many youth delegations such as the World Youth Alliance, Caritas Internationalis and Jeunesse Horizon, also participated in this session.

The Commission for Social Development is part of the Economic and Social Council and advises it, as well as Governments of the UN Member States, on a wide range of social policy issues and the social perspective of development.

The 53rd CsocD session should take place in 2015. The priority theme for the 2015-2016 review and policy cycle would be “rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world”.
